Family Guy- Sex Roles

Ilan & Ilana

If we got out of bed this morning, and headed for the bathroom to perform the first bodily movements of the day and realize we have changed physically to the other sex, the world would for sure come to its end. Several possible outcomes could occur. If we were able to remain mentally the same, meaning only a body swap, men and women would get to understand the troubles and sorrows of their counterparts. We would get to see her side of the story, and she would get to see ours. Gradually, our original mind would start fading away. We would start to assimilate our psychological side with our somatic one. Becoming our significant other in every way. But if our minds were to remain the same, we would go insane, living in the wrong body, most probably affecting any correct and healthy order of nature that was originally meant to be. Bikers, butchers, marines, builders. The toughest men would turn into skinny super models with pleasant physical attires.

Rats and Snakes

Huck and Tom's continuing plan to get Jim out of slavery just gets better and better, when it mixes with the picturesque ideas that the two boys have. Adding more fantasy to Tom's ideas, and books, he decides to add more creativity to the "grand escape". They make a mockery out of slavery, out of Jim (a human being) being held captive. This is the crude reality of he world at the time, but these there characters don,t see this way in the moment they are living. The boys are not fully aware of the seriousness of this matter, as Twain really did, and so contrasts this thought and situation with a more picturesque scene. Adding classic prisoner animals to Jim's shed, is an example of this.

Values and Theft: Tom's Moral Scale

After making plans to save Jim, and all of the tools, and goods they stole from Aunt Sally, they get away with it. It seems as if things were planned to work out. They fit perfectly together to lead Tom and Huck into success. This is not the first time this happens. When Huck steals the 6,000 dollars from the King and the Duke, he manages to blame some slaves, and get away with it, without much trouble or investigation by the royal frauds. the characters miss some obvious situations, giving the main characters way to make their plans succeed. "Ther's six CANDLES gone-that's what. The rats could a got the candles, and i reckon they did;.." (chp 37)
We can see the unclear moral values Tom expresses. After they steal all those things from Aunt Sally's basement, he has no problem with it. But when Huck stole a watermelon, he made him pay the slaves that were there a dime. He has some type of moral reasoning but does not apply it to what is really right, just to what he thinks is.

Escaping Slavery and Tom's Obstacles

In these chapters the reader can clearly identify a moral problem, and one very often concurred by humans. Theft. We always have this dilemma present in our lives. When to do it, why, and if it is correct. This is what Twain poses as a main theme in chapter 34. Huck needs to free Jim, but this means "stealing" him. “Didn’t I SAY I was going to help steal the nigger?” (chp 34). So this is a moral problem for them. But it is soon overcome by another obstacle that comes through, which is very interesting and is combined with Tom's quixotic way of thinking. Since he decides that the escape is fairly easy, he complicates it by going the difficult way. Situational irony is present when instead of just lifting the bed to get the chain that cuffs Jim out, he saws it off. This is not expected, and the point of stealing a slave is to do it quickly, but Tom decides to do it his adventure book way.

Watch Now

I see old boy scouts cheering as if they were still kids. They are cheering and celebrating with a man because of an apparent accomplishment he made. He has a bust of a face in his hands.

Essay Topic: Farce

In The Three Stooges ( I Want my Mummy episode) we can see how farce is employed in comedy. The fact that Curly places a carpet over the well to prevent people from falling is a clear element of farce, and a hyperbolic cliché. This only worsens the situation since the well is hidden. It is obvious that this well is going to be key in the future, and it proves to be, since it is their way out.

Writing

"Writing is the outburst of our literary mind."

The Three Stooges, After Humor Class

After watching these episodes of The Three Stooges, and having learned some comedy features in class, we can have a much better understanding of what is going on. For example, the use of slapstick. It is one of the most common actions they do in between them, since it is part of what makes it funny. Slapping each other for no important reason. It definitely employs farce as well. The fact that Curly places a carpet over the well to prevent people from falling is a clear element of farce, and a hyperbolic cliché. This only worsens the situation since the well is hidden. It is obvious that this well is going to be key in the future, and it proves to be, since it is their way out.
The things they do, the way they talk, and the puns that are made make it work as comedy. It works because it ridiculizes the characters, and the situations they find themselves in. This makes the viewers laugh, which is the ultimate and expected goal.

Crack of Doom

A film I identified as anticlimactic, was The Lord of the Rings: The Return of The King.
Not all of the film is anticlimactic, it is actually a very creative film about animaginative subject, and characters. Incredibly, almost at the and of the film, when one waits for a huge climax to occur, it is actually somewhat disappointing.
This moment is when Frodo is at the Crack of Doom, when he succumbs to the ring's power. Gollum appears, and fights with Frodo, biting one of his fingers off. After the whole journey, the entire movie basically protecting and carrying the Ring, and Gollum and Smeagull's treachery, The ring falls with Gollum into a pool of burning lava.
One would have expected Gollum suffering a poetic death, and the ring gone into good hands. But instead it all vanishes in a second, disappointing the anxious audience.

Joint Farce (DeFransico, Escobar, Pinski)

Saturday afternoon:

Dr. Skyler Pinski just got back to the city from one of his various business trips. But to his surprise, his favorite car, a 1969 MG is not working. He decides to take his car to the best auto shop in town.

When he gets his car singed in to the shop, he sees a very familiar face, though he is not sure it could who he thinks he is.

Dr.Pinski realized it was Ziggy Martini, his best friend in high school and college. It had been 20 years.

After Martini fixed his car, they decided to go out on a double date with gorgeous models, acquaintances of Pinski. They wanted to celebrate their reencounter. They went to the Waterfront, to the fanciest Bar in town, called “Biscayne X”. After they had a few drinks, danced, and enjoyed their evening with the models, they went out to walk by the piers, admiring the night sea view and the majestic yachts. But suddenly three men, with Uzi machine guns and bats, all dressed in black, with black masks cut us short from our walk. They took the girls, tied them up and gave them Chloral Hydrate to make them faint. They took Pinski and Martini into one of the boats, and beat them with the clubs they had. After a while Pinski caved in because of such severe pain, and gave them what they wanted, 20,000 dollars transferred directly to their bank account in Switzerland. After he did this, they beat them again, this time in the head. Both friends blacked out and fell to the floor.

But…

Martini was not quite unconscious when the apparent leader of the attackers took of his mask. It was a woman. A known robber nicknamed as “Mary Jane”. Martini saw her green eyes filled with satisfaction, and right then he passed out.

The robbers took them out of the boat, and left them at the entrance of the nearest Hospital. They were released the next day, refusing to talk to any psychologist or the police.

Airplane Vomiting "Bean" Bag

This episode of the epical and always hilarious Mr.Bean clearly employs buffoonery, which is a characteristic of Farce. Mr.Bean starts entertaining the kid, and at the same time entertains the audience with his childish games, and funny things he does. Even before they informed him the kid was sick, he is horse playing around on a plane, where you normally wouldn't.
After all the things he does to try and entertain the boy, and jokes about vomit, he turns around to look for a bag to pop, and here is when the most farce part of the episode kicks in. The kid throws up while Bean is turning around, without him noticing, which is really unlikely, and just after he finishes, Bean turns around and the kid hands him the bag. Again, how could he not notice the vomit inside the bag, or even the kid's face? Well, thats all part of the farce, and what makes it funny. He blows it up (not noticing the vomit inside, while his mouth is inside the bag with puke, and then pops it. The Farce has made the episode funny, and it has accomplished its purpose, which is to ridicule Mr. Bean, which obviously produces a funny scene.

"This Can Be Used To Shoot Down Police Choppers"

In this excerpt from The Simpsons, it is quite obvious a Hyperbole (an exaggeration) is employed in this scene. It is easily seen when Homer is testing the Gun. He tests it by squeezing the trigger several times, pointing at the vendor's face, which in real life clearly goes against gun safety regulations (you can't load or fire a weapon in a gun shop). And then when the guy shows Homer the weapon accessories, and at first, they are normal or considerably normal ones (like the Holster), but by the time he gets o the Rocket Launcher, it is an obvious exaggeration since a revolver only shoots at short range. And off course, there is no such thing as that accessory to shoot down police helicopters. It is possible the writers are mocking the gun fever in the US, and the crazy things guns can do. Also, the fact that Homer wants the gun right in that moment, but the guy tells him its a 5 day wait, while they confirm his identity, and checks his records in order to sell it to him. After Homer is clearly unhappy about this they fight like toddlers over the gun, again mocking the subject.
