Not all of the film is anticlimactic, it is actually a very creative film about animaginative subject, and characters. Incredibly, almost at the and of the film, when one waits for a huge climax to occur, it is actually somewhat disappointing.
This moment is when Frodo is at the Crack of Doom, when he succumbs to the ring's power. Gollum appears, and fights with Frodo, biting one of his fingers off. After the whole journey, the entire movie basically protecting and carrying the Ring, and Gollum and Smeagull's treachery, The ring falls with Gollum into a pool of burning lava.
One would have expected Gollum suffering a poetic death, and the ring gone into good hands. But instead it all vanishes in a second, disappointing the anxious audience.
